Detector Tool Tutorial: ranking by number of Red Flag and Restitution Case Names

This post, in the educational series on the experimental digital tool for analysing provenance texts, demonstrates Ranking by Red Flag Names (photo: Albright-Knox).

Work in progress. Feedback welcome.

Ranking Nazi-era provenance research priorities by number of "Art Looting Investigation Unit Red Flag Names" and "Names involved in Restitution Cases".

Example:  Albright-Knox Art Gallery

(5,029 artworks analysed)

note: The Albright-Knox Art Gallery was chosen at random for analysis to demonstrate how to use the Looted Art Detector. This ranking does NOT mean that the artworks are problematic, only that the indicators used in the test (see below) produced a high priority score for provenance research.

Artworks which do not have provenances do not appear in the ranking.

How "Looted Art Detector Results" Were Processed to Generate a Ranking

https://artdata.pythonanywhere.com

The input files above were uploaded, the name of the column (Provenance) entered, and "Click to run" clicked on. This generated a Results.csv file and downloaded it.

The results.csv quantifies the different elements in the provenances that were inputed in the above Indicator file.

The above ranking was produced by filtering for provenances of European artworks, created before 1945 and acquired after 1933, that contained at least one ALIU Red Flag name, then sorted by the number of Restitution Case Flags.

To produce the ranking from the results file, one can use the tool of one's choice, including a simply spreadsheet. Personally I prefer a tool like Workbenchdata which shows the sequence of operations, and is easy to use.

The ranking - which will of course change depending on which criteria one chooses to use -  should be both transparent and replicable by others. This will be discussed in detail further along in the series
