After the death of Haesje van Cleyburch and her husband Dirk Jansz. Pesser the painting probably remained in the family by inheritance. Eventually the painting came into the possession of the Van Gersdorff family through the marriage of Wolfgang Abraham van Gersdorff and Anna van der Linden, the great-granddaughter of Haesje (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 2 (1986), no. A 102).
On the back of the companion piece there is a wax seal with the coat-of-arms of the van Gersdorff family as used by Salomon Johan van Gersdorff in 1783 (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 2 (1986), no. A 103).

- 1924-06-02 After the death of August de Ridder in 1911 the painting was exhibited at the Kleinberger galleries in 1913 as part of the collection "of the late Herr A. de Ridder" (Bode 1913 [1], no. 1). In 1915 Hofstede de Groot mentioned that the painting was in the possession of F. Kleinberger (Hofstede de Groot 1907-1928, vol. 6 (1915), no. 739). Eventually the painting was sold at the auction of A. de Ridder's collection in Paris on June 2, 1924.

In one of the auction catalogues held at the RKD, The Hague, there's an annotation that also points to an anonymous Dutch buyer. However, in another copy of the catalgue, also held at the RKD, the annotation mentiones an anonymous American buyer.
