Dr Dirk Hannema and the looted art trade in the Netherlands

Dirk Hannema, Director of the Boijmans Museum, was the subject of a recent NYT article entitled: In a Netherlands Museum Director, the Nazis Found an Ally .

In 1946 the Office of Strategic Services Art Looting Investigation Unit (ALIU) published a series of reports that included a description of Dirk Hannema's role in the looted art trade, calling him the "principal collaborator in Dutch art world. Member of the Seyss-Inquart organisation. Adviser to Goering on art exchanges with Kroeller-Mueller. Believed to be in Dutch custody (May 1945)."*

The Seyss-Inquart organisation, of which Hannema was a member was a notorious Nazi looting organisation(1). His name appeared in connection to other known art looters in The ALIU Red Flag List of Names. Its leaders were recommended for trial as war criminals.

The Vlug Report 25 December 1945 by Jean Vlug, of the Royal Netherlands Army  for the Fine Arts (Special Services) section of the Dutch Restitution Committee

"He agreed with Müllmann's proposal that a commission of two Dutchmen and one German should fix the value of the paintings as a basis for the exchange and with the supplementary decision of the Kroller-Müller foundation with regards to the extension of the Park.
The commission consisted of:
Dr. Hannema, Van Deventer and Plietzsch."

After the war, Dr. Dirk Hannema had a successful career.

According to the Dictionary of Art Historians, "Following his release, in 1947, Hannema continued to work as an art collector and as the curator of his private collection, which he opened for the public in Weldom Castle in Goor. In 1958 he relocated the collection to Castle Het Nijenhuis in Heino, after having created, in 1957, the foundation Hannema-de Stuers Fundatie, named in honor of his parents. Hannema continued broadening his collection and serving as its curator until his death in 1984. Hannema's pre-war directorship contributed to the international importance of Museum Boymans."

Artworks linked to A&R Ball

Wife of a Member of the de Hondecoeter Family- NGA
How to get a picture of an art dealer's activity?

One approach might be to assemble every mention of his or her name.
If, for example, we return to the Balls (see Disambiguating the Balls and Art Provenance Research Red Flags: Alexander Ball) and try to inventory mentions of the Ball art-dealing family in the provenances published by American museums, the result - unformatted, messy, and incomplete - might look something like this:

Ultimately, if one gathers all the mentions of the art dealer in one place, it might be possible to gain a global view of his or her contributions to the cultural heritage of a country.

Relationships and events involving institutions and a dealer could be codified according to an accepted standard, such as CIDOC-CRM or LINKEDART, building on the efforts by digital humanities experts thus far.

As for URIs, they exist for museums and most art dealers, but it is not clear how to codify the thousands of artworks themselves. If a URI does not exist, can one simply use the URL? How?

What is the view of linked open data experts?

Explorations of Art Market Networks as LOD

Linked Jazz Triple Builder: a start for Goepel
In an earlier post, we explored the Nazi era art market network formed by Göpel (Goepel), Wuester, Holzapfel, Lefranc, Mandl, Birtschansky and Bloch. Is it possible to express their relationships and actions as linked open data?

How to formalize the relationships between these art market professionals and opportunists?

Does it make sense to approach the representation of this network as a kind of prosopography?

Disambiguating the Balls

Is it possible to mix URIs from many sources and obtain something intelligible?

BALL, an art dealing family operating in Dresden, Berlin, Paris, New York

see: Firma Hermann Ball, Firma Ball, Graupe und Ball, A & R Ball, Hermann Ball, Alexander Ball, Richard Ball

Hermann (Hirsch) Ball (1857 - 1924) and his sons Richard (born 1892) and Alexander operated an art dealership in Dresden, specializing in old masters, furniture and porcelain. The Firma Ball was registered in the Dresden Business Register in 1903 by Hermann Ball. His sons Richard and Alexander Ball joined the business in 1919.*

Alexander Ball, as noted in a previous post, was flagged by the OSS Art Looting Investigation Unit in 1946 for having working closely with notorious art looter Karl Haberstock during the Nazi era.

Yet it is difficult to find out much about him.

Born in Germany, Alexander Ball (also known as Alexandre Ball, Alex Ball or A. Ball) worked in France, before escaping to the USA. In NY, he set up a dealership with his brother Richard Ball, known as  A. and R. Ball, (A&R Ball, A. & R. Ball, etc).
