Otto Wertheimer was born 28 Dec 1896 in Buehl, Landkreis Rastatt, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. He studied art history in Munich from 1919 to 1923 with Heinrich Wölfflin and Paul Frankl. The title of his doctoral thesis is
Nicolaus Gerhaert. Seine Kunst und seine Wirkung, Berlin 1929.
In 1932/33 he worked at the Staatliche Museen Berlin but could not continue because of his jewish descent.
