+ Guido Lehmbruck, the artist's son told the Tate (2 July 1975) that the Buchholz Gallery exhibition in 1937 consisted mainly of pieces which had been confiscated from German museums as 'degenerate art'. This cast was thought to be that from Museum Folkwang at Essen, however that cast was not confiscated and remains in Essen. Other casts known to have been owned by German museums in 1937 remain in their collections. The number of casts made now appears to have been larger than was previously thought.

Tate contacted the executors of Agnes Clarke in February 1979, in the course of cataloguing the work. They replied that they believed that it was 'pretty certain' that the picture had been purchased in England, rather than inherited. They believed that it had been purchased by John Semple Clarke, who was in the US airforce during World War II.
