If one googles Nathan Katz, Wikipedia pages for a  professor and a poet of this name will appear. But if one is searching for the Dutch art dealer, one must look further. Katz is a very common name, and confusion is a problem. In this post we attempt to bring together a few elements to help identify Nathan Katz the art dealer, who owned the  Dutch dealership Firma D. Katz in Dieren, Netherlands.

(One wonders whether it might not make more sense to create Firma D. Katz as a "Corporate Body" and members of the Katz family - Benjamin, David, Hanna, Joseph, Nathan and W. Katz- as separate individuals (person, owners, non-artists). The current set up, lumping the individual and  the business together in a single "person" file in the "unidentified" category seems confusing.... It is not clear how this will work when the Getty switches to Linked Open Data...)

More on the history of the Katz family and the Dutch dealership: Firma D. Katz

From 1936 and through the war years the Schaeffers were engaged in a consignment partnership with the Dutch dealership Firma D. Katz in Dieren, Netherlands. Regular business dealings with the Katz family (Benjamin, David, Hanna, Joseph, Nathan and W. Katz) continued after the war.  - source Schaeffer Galleries Records 910148  OAC

David Katz ran an antiques business in Dieren, a village near Arnhem. His four sons were also active in the art and antiques business. According to information in the 1930 trade register, two of them, Nathan and Benjamin Katz, continued their activities as a general partnership using the name of their father’s business, which was said to have been discontinued by then. During the 1930s, this art dealership, Firma D. Katz, was established at various addresses in Dieren. Two other brothers, Abraham Katz and Simon Katz, were also active in the art and antiques business. As far as the Committee has been able toascertain, they were not partners of Firma D. Katz of Dieren, but traded under their own name in Apeldoorn, Dieren and The Hague in the 1930s
