DATASET: Art Provenances AFTER Restitution of Looted Art

Claims for Nazi-looted art or duress sales sometimes result in restitution or settlement agreements which cause the restituted artwork to be sold at auction.

Below are artworks whose provenance, as published by Christie's auction house, mentions a restitution or settlement agreement with the heir of a victim of Nazi persecution.

These provenance texts provide valuable information to art historians and Holocaust researchers, offering insights into the art market networks that dealt in Holocaust-linked artworks between the time they left the possession of the persecuted Jewish collectors and the time they were restituted.

https://www.christies.com/lot/lot-5955014A MEISSEN CRINOLINE GROUP OF 'LA TASSE DE CHOCOLAT'CIRCA 1740A COLLECTION FROM AN HOTEL PARTICULIER ON THE AVENUE MONTAIGNEThe following twenty-two lots (lots 44-65) were acquired between circa 1890 and circa 1930 by an important French industrial family. The porcelain principally decorated their hôtel particulier on the Avenue Montaigne in central Paris, as depicted in the two 1920s watercolours below. The main collector, a successful industrialist, had a particular taste for magnificent 18th century Meissen and other German manufactories and later he and his son carefully expanded the breadth of the collection to incorporate French porcelain, and in particular, 18th century Sèvres. The family actively lived with the porcelain, with multiple items tastefully ornamenting their well-attended dinner tables, others delicately living behind glass vitrines. The hôtel particulier was in those days a prominent fixture of the Parisian social scene and the pieces accompanied the family in most gatherings. During the Second World War, the collection was confiscated by the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg following the occupation of France in May 1940, and it was subsequently restituted in 1946. In 1962 the collection was carefully wrapped up and put in strong wooden crates which were then left unopened for over 50 years. In October 2014 the same dusty crates were finally opened up and their beautiful contents revealed. The same family now three generations later is offering this extraordinary collection for sale. This is the second and final portion of the collection to be offered in these Rooms. The last portion will be offered at Christie’s, South Kensington, in Spring 2016.
https://www.christies.com/lot/lot-4728689TALHOFFER, Hans (fl. 1435-1482), Fechtbuch, in German, ILLUSTRATED MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER[Germany,?Schwabia, first half 16th century]PROPERTY OF THE HEIRS OF RUDOLF RITTER VON GUTMANN Rudolf Ritter von Gutmann was born on May 21, 1880 in Vienna, the son of coal and steel magnate Wilhelm von Gutmann and his wife Ida, née Wodianer. One of the foremost entrepreneurs of the Austrian-Hungarian industrial revolution, Wilhelm von Gutmann was also active in civic life -- he founded the fore-runner of the Federation of Austrian Industrialists -- and in philanthropic work. He was involved in the establishment and funding of many Jewish charities, schools and institutions, such as the famed Rudolfinerhaus Hospital. After Wilhelm's death in 1895, his son Max assumed responsibility for the family business, allowing his brother Rudolf to pursue his interest in the Fine Arts. Financially independent, Rudolf built up a vast collection of Old Master paintings, works of art, engravings, prints, books and manuscripts. Within a few years he had assembled a collection that was considered one of the finest and most important private collections in Austria. In 1938, only hours before the Anschluss, Gutmann and his wife Marianne, née Freiin von Ferstel, fled Austria, leaving behind all their possessions. They escaped to Czechoslovakia and finally settled in British Columbia, where they were to live until Rudolf von Gutmann's death in 1966. Gutmann's collection, consisting of more than 1000 items, his business assets and his extensive real estate, were all seized by the Nazis. The majority of the art collection was intended for Hitler's planned Linz Museum and stored under the Führervorbehalt. Many items entered museums and public collections, including the National Library, the Kunsthistorische Museum, the Joanneum, Graz, the Belvedere and the Albertina. Gutmann was successful in regaining parts of his collection after the war and, following the Austrian Art Restitution Act (1998), 'donated' works from the National Library and the Albertina were returned to his heirs in 2006. Christie's is delighted to be able to offer the following group of manuscripts from the ÖNB on behalf of the heirs of Rudolf Ritter von Gutmann. Two 15th-century prints restituted from the Albertina will be included in the sale of Old Master, Modern and Contemporary Prints, 20 September 2006 at London, King St.

(108 x 22cm.), probably German, very slightly wornSee IllustrationAn Important Collection of Samplers, Needlework, Purses and Waistcoats The following lots (385-549) formed part of a collection of textiles, porcelain, furniture and paintings that have descended to the present owners from Emma-Henriette Schiff von Suvero (1863-1924). Fifteen years after her death the pieces were 'sold' to the Staatliche Kunstgewerbemuseum, Vienna, in August 1939. The Museum, now known as the Museum für Angewandte Kunst (MAK), displayed and stored the items until they were rightfully restituted by the Austrian Government to the descendants of Emma-Henriette Schiff von Suvero in Spring 2003. Many of the pieces have not been on the open market for almost a century, or even longer. This collection is remarkable both in its size and in the quality of the pieces. Thanks in major part to their careful storage at the MAK, many are in unusually good condition and have retained very sharp colours. Notable, too, is the diversity of the samplers. As one might expect, there are many early Continental band samplers - and such good examples rarely come on the market - but there are also a considerable number of British and other samplers, including miniature examples and a collection of darning samplers. Needlework, purses and waistcoats make up the remainder of this fascinating collection. All the samplers and needlework are unframed.
